Pollen is doing more than you think.

If your car is already turning yellow, you’re not imagining it—pollen season has arrived early in Richmond. It's easy to notice on windshields, but the real buildup is happening on your home and property surfaces.

Brick, patios, walkways, and entry areas are some of the first places to collect pollen, moisture, and organic debris. Left untreated, this buildup can dull surfaces, create slippery conditions, and even contribute to long-term staining.

This month, we’re highlighting two projects that reflect what we see this time of year: early surface buildup and the importance of proper cleaning—especially on historic materials.

“Should I Wait Until the Pollen Is Over?”

It’s one of the most common questions we hear this time of year—and it makes sense. If pollen keeps falling, why clean now?

The reality is, waiting often creates more work and more buildup.

Pollen doesn’t just sit on surfaces—it bonds with moisture and porous materials like brick, concrete, and stone.

As it builds up, it can:

  • Set into surfaces and cause staining
  • Trap moisture leading to organic growth
  • Create slick, unsafe walkways and patios

Early-season cleaning removes that initial layer before it has a chance to settle in. From there, maintenance becomes much easier, even as pollen continues to fall.

Think of it as a strong reset for your spring and summer outdoor activities.

Starting clean now helps protect your surfaces and keeps your property looking consistent throughout the season.

For many properties, this approach is easier and more effective than waiting and tackling months of buildup all at once.

Tips for maintenance:

While pollen is unavoidable this time of year, a few simple steps can help reduce how much of it settles and sticks to your surfaces:

  • Rinse high-traffic areas regularly
Lightly rinsing patios, walkways, and entry points helps prevent buildup from setting in.
  • Keep surfaces dry when possible
Pollen sticks more easily when moisture is present—especially on brick and concrete.
  • Clear debris from corners and edges
Pollen collects in low spots, along walls, and around steps where airflow is limited.
  • Pay attention to shaded areas
These spots tend to hold moisture longer, making it easier for buildup to develop.
  • Stay ahead of it early
Removing the first layer of pollen makes ongoing maintenance much easier throughout the season.

Start with a professional cleaning to fully reset surfaces and prevent long-term buildup as the season progresses.

Cleaning Historic Properties the Right Way

Not all cleaning methods are safe for historic materials.

At Envirowash, we specialize in working with older brick, stone, and masonry surfaces. As a historically experienced restoration provider, we understand that these materials require a different approach than modern construction.

That means:

  • Low-pressure cleaning methods
  • Surface-specific solutions
  • Careful attention to mortar and aging materials

The goal is to restore clarity while preserving its integrity. Both of this month’s projects reflect that balance, where proper technique protects what makes each structure unique.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

Cleaning of Historical Brick Structures

This month, we're sharing an older, classic brick home with a beautifully designed rear patio and original masonry details.

The brick exterior had begun to show buildup, especially across shaded areas and near architectural features. These subtle changes can flatten the natural color variation that gives historic brick its character.

Our team used a soft washing approach tailored specifically for older masonry. With low pressure and carefully selected cleaning solutions, we were able to lift buildup without disturbing the brick face or mortar joints.

The result is a refreshed appearance that enhances the brick's depth while preserving its age and craftsmanship. It’s a great example of how proper maintenance can quietly elevate a property by maintaining its unique beauty.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

Graffiti Removal on Historical Brick Building

Taking extreme care to refresh a historical building is only the beginning of what our experienced team can do. When you are facing additional obstacles, such as removing graffiti, you need experts to handle the job. That's what we did with this late 19th-century brick building in downtown Richmond. The building houses several local businesses. Unfortunately, the building had accumulated multiple layers of graffiti, detracting from both appearance and professionalism.

Our team approached the project with a targeted graffiti removal process designed specifically for historic brick. Using controlled pressure, we were able to break down and lift paint without damaging the aged masonry or mortar joints. Special attention was given to areas with tight access points around fencing and other building elements.

The result is a clean, uniform surface that restores the building’s integrity while supporting the professional image of the businesses operating within. Consistent maintenance for historical buildings preserves both property value and community appearance.
